Series 8 - Episode 1 Deception Indicated

Review

Previously, on Homeland: poor, put-upon Carrie Mathison – wild of hair and eye – was handed over after seven months in a Russian gulag without her meds. And long-standing fans of the show knew exactly what that meant. She ran straight past her mentor Saul Berenson, who was now apparently a stranger to her.

That axis of trust and friendship about which all the cloak-and-dagger cut and thrust has revolved is what has made this slick counter-terrorism thriller so watchable for seven series, even when the plots have thumbed their nose at credibility. And the leads are astonishingly good: Mandy Patinkin as the gruff, gnomic security adviser Saul and Claire Danes as Carrie, pulled in all directions like a svelte Stretch Armstrong.

So the scene is well set for the eighth and final series, with a new president in the White House, and Saul in charge of peace talks with the Taliban. Can he persuade Carrie to accompany him on one final mission?

Summary

New series. The final series of the CIA thriller begins with Carrie Mathison recovering from brutal confinement in a Russian gulag. Saul, National Security Adviser to President Warner, has been dispatched to engage the Taliban in Afghanistan peace negotiations. But Kabul teems with warlords and mercenaries, zealots and spies - and Saul needs the relationships and expertise that only his protege can provide.
