Review

Back when this episode was filmed in 2017, the country had recently been terrorised by so-called “killer clowns”. Cast your mind back and you may recall newspaper headlines about face-painted pranksters terrifying parkgoers. But I’m afraid pop culture crazes do tend to peak and fade, so Midsomer Murders’s take on this great clown panic does now feel a little dated. I mean, what’s next: an ice-bucket challenge with deadly consequences?

Having said all that, there is something universally creepy about circuses, and this big-top-set mystery certainly has its moments, mainly thanks to the performances of its guest stars. Jason Watkins, in particular, is terrific as an angsty ringmaster, but then, when did he ever give a bad performance? As for Barnaby, as ever he looks like he’s trying to prise some recalcitrant toffee down from the roof of his mouth. But this time there’s a reason for his pinched expression: he’s suffering with coulrophobia. I’ll let pathologist Fleur explain what that’s all about.
