DIY SOS: The Big Build: Bolton

DIY SOS: The Big Build: Bolton

Series 30

Autism doesn’t just affect the person who has it; there are knock-on consequences for their family, too. Take the Taylor-Manns in Bolton. Nine-year-old William’s autism is severe; he finds it hard to sleep, so often keeps his sisters awake at night. He also likes climbing through upstairs windows and turning on bathroom taps – an extra stress for parents Martin and Heather. What they all need is a bit of extra room, and a space in which William can find quiet and calm.

Martin has made a start on improvements, but work and money constraints mean he can’t continue. Time for the DIY SOS gang, plus designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, to replace chaos with order.

The team transforms a home in Bolton, Lancashire for the Taylor-Mann family, making the house more suitable for nine-year-old William, who has severe autism. Williams's condition means that he is extremely hypersensitive to noise, and being in close proximity to his siblings is often just too much for him to bear. Nick Knowles and the team, with the help of kind volunteers, transform the property to create a quiet, calm space that can help William feel as comfortable as possible.
