You might have forgotten about Matt, the clean-cut American politico with whom Nikki formed her own Special Relationship in the last series. The two of them are still an item, although keeping things going between continents and while Matt runs for Congress isn’t plain sailing. More to the point, as we rejoin Nikki, she is sitting in her bathroom gazing at a pregnancy test…
But that’s all in the background as the Lyell Centre team is seconded to Brighton, where severed – and lavishly tattooed – limbs are turning up at a landfill site. The fact that we’ve heard snippets of vaguely oriental flute on the soundtrack signals there will turn out to be a Japanese connection, and as luck would have it, superhumanly knowledgeable Clarissa speaks Japanese.
By the way, if you’re wondering why that Brighton detective looks so familiar, the actor also played the evil minicab driver in Broadchurch. And yes, his detective sergeant really is played by Downton Abbey’s Samantha Bond.
