Review

I’m thinking maybe the Italian Express of the title doesn’t refer to trains because Gino D’Acampo really doesn’t spend much time travelling on them. Perhaps it’s the speed with which he can prepare a fantastic Italian meal.

This time he’s in the Cinque Terre, a picturesque region in north-west Italy where five multicoloured towns cling to the cliffsides. It’s probably not the place for someone who doesn’t like heights, especially if, as Gino does, you ride on a precarious Heath Robinson contraption that winds up the mountains. On the menu is a quick minestrone and an easy-peasy lemon-squeezy tiramisu that doesn’t feature coffee.

Summary

Gino D'Acampo visits the jewel of the Italian Riviera - the Cinque Terre - five towns that are only accessible by boat or train. He begins in the smallest town, Corniglia, where he meets an opera-singing florist, before hopping on the train to Manarola and the dry-stone wallers responsible for keeping the towns from crumbling into the sea. As he heads toward the end, he also heading to Vernazza, Gino meets wine producers who scale 1,000m above sea level to tend to their vines.
