Review

Last year’s Christmas edition of Michael McIntyre’s Big Show came second only to the Queen’s annual broadcast in the ratings, a remarkable success that surely surprised no one. Because this is a rarity: a proper family show that isn’t stuffy, smutty or snide. It’s a series of uncomplicated laughs powered by a big, beating heart. McIntyre is an absolute master as he marshals all the elements of a winning format in a way that, simply, no other British entertainer could.

The first hapless phone-user of the new series is adventurer Bear Grylls, who hands over his phone for the Send to All slot, where McIntyre delivers a barmy text to Grylls’s entire mobile address book. It turns out Grylls has some very nice friends.

But the night belongs to repairs garage administrator Lauren, the Unexpected Star of the Show, who thinks she’s come to London on a go-karting trip…

Summary

The lively comedian hosts an evening of entertainment, recorded in front of an audience at the London Palladium. The first edition features a musical performance by Liam Payne, who performs his latest single, Stack it Up, and survival expert Bear Grylls hands his phone over to the host for Send To All.
