Review

Pootling along the canals of the Midlands and the north of England, soaking up the scenery, sounds idyllic. But Robbie Cumming, who’s lived on his narrowboat for three years, shows how tough it can be. Before he even sets off, he has to disentangle a pair of manky old long johns from his propeller.

He’s keeping a visual diary of the leisurely journey from Shardlow in Derbyshire to Liverpool, which is a charming, gentle way for us to experience canal life without all the hard work, miserable weather and messy DIY jobs. It’s not quite Slow TV – there’s too much factual information and comment for that – but it’s still relaxing to watch.

Summary

Robbie Cumming explores the Trent and Mersey Canal on a journey from Shardlow to Etruria Junction in Stoke-on-Trent. However, not everything goes to plan, and he will have to deal with a tricky issue with his propeller as well as navigating the complicated locks on the Trent and Mersey Canal.
