Series 4 - Episode 3 Cardiff

“I’m hearing choirs of angels…” sighs Bendor Grosvenor as he gazes lovingly at a Madonna and Child pulled from the stores of the National Museum of Wales. Grosvenor is always a tremendous guide on these canters through art history, oozing easy charm and connoisseurship. And this week he has an A-list subject, too – Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, no less.

But hang on: why would a gallery keep a Botticelli in its store room? In this case, because the painting has been attributed to “a follower of Botticelli”, but Bendor believes the picture, or at least parts of it, are by the master himself, and he recruits Simon Gillespie and his cotton wool swabs to get at the truth beneath the dirt and varnish.

In Cardiff Art Gallery, the experts investigate a badly overpainted Madonna. Elsewhere, Dr Bendor Grosvenor travels to Florence to explore the early Renaissance. Last in the series.
