Would I Lie to You?

Series 13 - Episode 5

“They’ve replaced Would I Lie to You?? with politicians…Oh, the irony!” groaned David Mitchell recently, while hosting Have I Got News for You. He was bemoaning the way the general election had seen his show usurped by one-off specials: this edition was originally scheduled for 22 November. But it’s been worth waiting for, because Bob Mortimer is a guest.

There’s a Bob Mortimer episode every series now, and it is always a bit special. His presence noticeably changes the comic chemistry of the studio, whether it’s discussing motorised sofas with Lee Mack or examining a plastic flower that Jay Blades from The Repair Shop (a guest on the opposing team) claims he watered by mistake for a month.

We know at some point Bob will have a far-fetched tale of his own to tell, and it comes at the end of the show in a flurry of glorious nonsense about how he once masterminded a heist on a campsite tuck shop in Hexham. Pressed for details, he insists his memories of the incident are vague: “It’s like picking bits of pollen off a mouse’s handkerchief,” he protests. “So don’t get all forensic on me.”

Jay Blades, Sue Johnston, Alice Levine and Bob Mortimer join host Rob Brydon and regular captains David Mitchell and Lee Mack on the comedy panel show. As usual, the participants set out to hoodwink their opponents with absurd facts and plausible fibs about themselves in a bid to secure a team victory, through rounds including Home Truths and Quick-fire Lies. Savvy viewers may have noted that after 12 series, both Mitchell and Mack are running woefully short of truthful bizarre experiences to recount of themselves.
