New Zealand v England: First Test Day One

England has never lived through a cricketing summer quite like it. A breathtaking knife-edge victory in the World Cup final, followed by an unsuccessful bid to regain the Ashes that will be forever remembered for the almighty heroics of Ben Stokes at Headingley. But while the memories of those glorious days start to fade like a summer suntan, captain Joe Root leads England back into the Test arena tonight for the first of a two-match series against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.

The Black Caps lie marginally ahead of the tourists in the world Test rankings, and if the opening T20 skirmishes of the tour are any sort of guide, this will be a tough assignment for an England squad featuring four uncapped players. Forget about the weather outside – stay up all night and pretend it’s July all over again.

This is England's first test series under new head coach Chris Silverwood, who will be looking for an immediate improvement from an England side who have been largely inconsistent in test cricket in the last couple of years. New Zealand won the last test series between these two sides 1-0 in March 2018.
