Series 15 - Episode 8 Steam Train

Review

One early exchange in this episode sets alarm bells ringing. As a project manager pitches her corporate awayday to a client, the latter fixes her with a steely glare. Perhaps he has seen previous series of The Apprentice and it occurs to him to check something… “So you’ll pledge not to run out of drink?” he asks, and the PM shoots back, “Absolutely.” How’s that for a hostage to fortune? Can you see where this might be heading?

It’s one plotline in a splendid episode charting attempts by Empower and Unison to lay on corporate fun and games aboard a steam train, for a soft drinks firm and a travel agency. When it doesn’t go smoothly, the Lord Sugar pun-machine puffs and wheezes in the boardroom and out pops “Never mind Crossrail, this is like furious rail!” Hmm, sort of.

Look out for inept negotiations, a hilarious conversation about the word “stretch” and an outbreak of gallantry in the boardroom that is strangely touching.

Summary

In the eighth week of the competition, the candidates are challenged to host a corporate away day onboard the iconic Belmond British Pullman Train, arranging food, drinks and entertainment and also securing a good ticket price. The task will require the teams to show off their organisation and hospitality skills as they hope to impress the corporate clients. For one team the journey gets off to a bumpy start, while the others are left red faced when they have to deal with hungry guests. Back in the boardroom, one of the candidates is sent home from the competition.
