The Cockfields

Series 1 - Episode 1

Review

There will be a stomach lurch of recognition here for anyone who’s spent a long weekend under their in-laws’ roof, getting used to family mores and peculiarities. At this point, I should probably state that my own in-laws are lovely. And also very likely to be reading to this. But pity poor Donna (Diane Morgan), who accompanies new boyfriend Simon (Joe Wilkinson) back to the Isle of Wight for his 40th birthday party and has to endure some frankly horrendous living-room toenail-clipping on her first night.

It’s all painfully well observed (Sue Johnston is a stand-out as devoted mum Sue) and there are even mentions for two mighty cultural institutions: Radio Times and Howards’ Way. What’s not to like?

Summary

Simon is persuaded to mark the occasion of his 40th birthday back at the Cockfield family home, so takes his girlfriend Donna along to the Isle of Wight. The duo soon find themselves spending a long weekend as guests of his ever-doting mother Sue and controlling stepfather Ray, together with their menagerie of relatives and friends. Donna soon finds herself contending with an unconventional lunch and cliff-top walk. Comedy, starring Joe Wilkinson, Diane Morgan, Sue Johnston and Bobby Ball.
