Miss Scarlet and the Duke

Miss Scarlet and the Duke

Series 1 - Episode 4

Review

Infuriated by the police and press’s failure to recognise her part in solving crimes, Eliza is sidetracked by the Victorian vogue for spiritualism. Hired by a “death photographer” who is receiving unnerving messages, she attends a séance, while Detective Inspector Wellington is detained by an oddball journalist (played by Kevin Eldon, whose genius for eccentric turns enlivens any show).

With its moody lighting, period peripherals and Sherlocky soundtrack, Miss Scarlet and the Duke certainly has the ring of familiarity, while the light tone and gentle romantic undertow give it the air of a Moonlighting in a bustle. But Rachael New’s sparky policier is best when pursuing its own, feminist agenda.

Summary

Eliza is hired by a Death Photographer who is receiving bizarre and threatening messages from beyond the grave, and later makes a surprising discovery about her late father.
