Series 2011 - Episode 2 Tarts

Review

There is much gentle ribaldry about “soggy bottoms” and even “good, firm bottoms” as this soothing, escapist series turns its attention to pastry. As always, experts Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood play good cop, bad cop as the quivering contestants bring forth their tarts.

The first test is a savoury quiche, and there are some real beauties. One hopeful makes a “manly” quiche, even though, as he puts it, “pastry can be a cruel mistress”. Then everyone has to make a perfect lemon tart, made to a Mary Berry recipe, before the final challenge. But there are hard decisions to be made along the way and Hollywood doesn’t mince his words.

Summary

The 11 remaining bakers are given the task of creating a quiche that reflects their personalities, before tackling the technical challenge - tarte au citron. The pressure proves too much for some, as they try to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
