Driverless cars have got truckers and taxi drivers fearing for their jobs. But the death of Elaine Herzberg, killed by one such vehicle in 2018, fuelled the debate over their safety. Unfortunately, as this sober documentary (first screened in the States last October) shows, driving is one of the most complex activities that humans regularly engage in.

A look into the science behind its development reveals the chief stumbling block for the self-driving software as “perception” – the complex ability to interpret and derive meaning from data. While this is an eye-opening glimpse into how artificial intelligence “thinks”, the fact that many people actually enjoy driving isn’t really discussed.
