Review

What’s this… Richard Ayoade announcing that “this has been a superb experience”? There’s a surprise. He and Ellie Taylor are in Madrid, where they quite enjoy the tour of the Prado art gallery with an expert (although Ayoade reckons that Dali’s The Great Masturbator is “a bit prog rock for me”) and they don’t mind visiting a shop specialising in violet sweets.

But, despite being “like the opening sequence to Casualty”, it’s a lesson in ham carving that makes them squeal with delight. Sadly, their brief introduction to pig slicing is nowhere near long enough to turn them into a maestro cortador de Jamon, so they drown their sorrows in a local vermoutheria where they’re even more disappointed to find Madrileños’ favourite tipple tastes like cold mulled wine – or maybe “something you might gargle with”.

Summary

Richard Ayoade and comedian Ellie Taylor head to the Spanish capital for a two-day break, following an itinerary rich in art, history, histrionics and ham. The pair go on a guided tour in which they view masterpieces by Bosch, Velasquez, Picasso and Dali, before they attend a ham-carving workshop and a sample a five-course tasting menu, of which four courses are pork or ham, including a tartare dish. They also take in a lively boating lake, a circus church and a grisly tour of the Spanish Inquisition.
