Review

Watching a giraffe give birth, as we do here, is such a privilege. Although you may wince slightly as the newborn calf makes the six-foot drop to earth. After such a bumpy entry into the world, you can’t blame little Mburo for struggling to stand and suckle.

We also meet Girlie the macaw, a breed of parrot with “the intelligence level of a five-year-old child”, who manages to escape her aviary, leading the keepers on a merry chase around Chester for over two days. Plus we’re introduced to mountain chicken Beryl, who’s probably not how you imagine her. She’s a frog.

Summary

The Rothschild's giraffes are expecting a new addition as 12-year-old matriarch Dagmar, whose last calf died after a few days, goes into labour after a 15-month pregnancy. Orang-utan sisters Tuti and Siska, and their baby cousin Kesuma, rebuild their relationship after the trauma of the fire that engulfed their habitat in December 2018, while the keepers set off in pursuit when a blue-throated macaw goes on the run.
