“Bring your technical challenges up to the judging table,” Harry Hill announces. But as the first batch of ten young bakers nervously carry their bakes across the tent, disaster strikes. One competitor accidentally bumps into another sending his plate of cakes crashing to the ground. There are tears, although the youngster quickly recovers to give a post-bake interview with impressive aplomb. What a sweetie.
In fact, they’re all remarkably calm, self-confident and seemingly unfazed by the presence of judges Prue “Queen of the Crumb” Leith and Liam Charles. Harry spends a lot of time being silly, which sensibly they just ignore, but he’s wonderfully reassuring when there’s a problem. The theme for the showstoppers is “my favourite school subject”, which prompts a startlingly realistic brain decoration on top of one biology-inspired sponge. Obviously, there are no Hollywood handshakes but one young baker gets a high five from Liam, which I’m guessing must be almost as good.
Summary
Harry Hill hosts as young cooks take part in a culinary competition to determine which of them is Britain's best junior baker. Judges Prue Leith and Liam Charles oversee proceedings in the opening heat as the first 10 of the 20 contenders enter the tent to tackle two challenges.
