Castle Ward 1

Series 42 - Episode 9 Castle Ward 1

This week’s venue, Castle Ward in Northern Ireland, is not your usual stately home. Built in the 1700s by a couple with differing tastes, the façade is classic Palladian while the back is defiantly Gothic – and the interior has an equally split personality. It’s quite a bizarre thing to see.

There are some unusual items for the experts to value, too, including an embroidered memento sewn from human hair and an extremely long table that was found in a builder’s yard half hidden under 11 bags of cement. The current owner uses it to seat his large family for Christmas dinner, although originally it was to hold the coffin during the wake.

Fiona Bruce and the team are at Castle Ward on the shores of Strangford Lough in Co Down, where items assessed include a plate from Buckingham Palace, embroidery made from human hair and a traditional Irish wake table. The experts also appraise a Tongan war club that narrowly escaped being chopped up for firewood and a 1960s TV set inspired by the first Moon landing.
