Gary Rose
Over 2,000 metres above sea level in northern Ethiopia, Ben meets Susan, a 70-year-old Scot who co-runs an extraordinary spiralling restaurant that resembles… a space-age terracotta shoe decorated with martini glasses. Yes, it’s as surreal as it sounds. It’s got to be one of the most exotic locations New Lives has visited.
Ben is overwhelmed by a Coptic Christian ceremony that feels, apart from the odd baseball cap, like a portal back through the millennia. With its contoured mountain ranges and colourful market, it’s a beautiful location generally, although former schoolteacher Susan’s interaction with the local children is the most beautiful aspect of all.
Summary
Ben meets a Glaswegian retired teacher who relocated to the mountains of Ethiopia, and leads an active life in her new home as she approaches her 70th birthday. She has made significant contributions to the local community, including setting up a school and building a restaurant on an isolated mountain top over the course of three years.
