Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment

Series 1 - Episode 6

Cameras go inside the Segregation Unit at HMP Winchester, a prison within a prison where some of the most difficult and disruptive offenders are sent. When segregation was first introduced to modern prisons in the mid-19th century, its aim was to force prisoners to reflect on their bad deeds. In recent years, the punishment has come under increasing scrutiny for the detrimental effect it can have on mental health, well-being and rehabilitation. The film explores why the units still exist and how prisons strive to deal with some of their most complex individuals.
