Review

On 3 December 1917, three young soldiers of the London Regiment were killed near Anneux in northern France during the Battle of Cambrai. A century later, their remains happened to be uncovered by a farmer digging a drain in his garden, and the hunt was on to discover who the soldiers were and whether they had any surviving relatives.

This special edition follows the extraordinary work of the Ministry of Defence team whose job is to identify service personnel lost in battle using patient research, forensic evidence and DNA tests. One set of surviving relatives are unearthed in California and are visibly moved to learn more about their ancestor – and to attend his burial in France.
