Series 1 - Episode 2 Tribalism

The topic of tribalism is on the agenda in episode two and, in the internet age, it appears there are more tribes than ever before.

Using English football and US politics as the two main examples, psychologists explain how entrenched opinions can be influenced by a combination of genetics and environment, with partisan media coverage and social media echo chambers amplifying fear and division. And, as experiments have shown, once our opinions are established, subconscious biases compel us to ignore objectivity in favour of ideas that support our argument. With such a lack of empathy, it’s no wonder everyone’s fighting. An essential, if stressful, watch.

Cognitive scientist Laurie Santos examines how tribalism shapes perceptions of other groups.
