Eat Well for Less?

Series 6 - Episode 4

Review

Of course programmes like this rely on finding extreme cases, but: blimey. An emetic opening sequence introduces Rita and Peter from Newark, who enjoy fruit syrup on their porridge, lemon curd for lunch and something fried for dinner, with sweets and cola in between and a slab of choccy before bed. They both have Type 2 diabetes! Never mind trying to save £30 a week by ditching big brands: Peter and Rita are killing themselves.

We never find out exactly what’s going on in Rita and Peter’s heads, because they respond well to gentle nudges from Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin, shifting from takeaways to home cooking and accepting most of the proffered low-sugar alternative food and drink. Seemingly ingrained habits don’t die too hard after all. Talking of which, a detour to Forest Green Rovers FC forms a punchy reminder of the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Summary

Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin meet the Waltons in Nottinghamshire, a family with a high-sugar diet that is having a serious impact on their health and their bank balance. Couple Rita and Pete have both been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, and Gregg and Chris are stunned by this couple's serious sugar addiction when they oversee their shopping.
