Sometimes one of the candidates on Lord Sugar’s selection process leaps off the screen fully formed. (Not always in a good way: look at Katie Hopkins.) This year’s standout is Thomas Skinner, the cockney pillow-monger with a barrer-boy voice and Sid James ’avin-a-larf attitude.

So far, he has stolen the show with his cartoonish star quality and lashings of gruff enthusiasm. Here he is on this week’s toy-making task: “We’re gonna get in there, we’re gonna smash it up, we’re gonna make it look the nuts, we’re gonna sell loads of ’em…It’s gonna be the biggest craze of 2019!” He’s like an over-excited bulldog, but judging by the way he flogged iced lollies last week, you wouldn’t bet against him.


In the third week of the competition, the candidates join Lord Sugar at London's Cambridge Theatre, where they find out the next task will challenge them to design a toy for six-to-eight-year-olds, along with an online video to promote their brand. The teams must create their toys and prepare their pitches, before presenting their concepts to some of the biggest names in the toy industry. Back in the boardroom, one candidate from the losing team will be sent home.
