Review

It’s the quarter-finals and pastry week, which leads Paul Hollywood to ask one of the great existential questions of our time: “What makes a pie a pie?” It’s something all the great thinkers have wrestled with, maybe the remaining five contestants can give us the answer?

Possibly, though there is some tough judging, particularly in the showstopper round where the little group must each make a “stunning vertical pie”. They are an imaginative lot with some splendid designs, but as for the actual pie-ness of the pies… ah well, Prue and Paul pull no pie-punches.

Elsewhere, there are tears and Noel Fielding steps in with kind words, and the signature round involves a tarte tatin, though not your usual tarte tatin with apples or pears, this is a savoury tarte tatin. Cue an awful lot of goat’s cheese and much use of that lovely and evocative phrase, “soggy bottoms”.

Summary

Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig host as the remaining bakers' knowledge of pastry is tested. The Signature challenge is a savoury take on a French classic, there's a multi-layered Moroccan Technical, and a towering Showstopper that requires not only an expertise with pastry, but also a solid grasp of structural engineering. With a place in the semi-final at stake, who will win the coveted Star Baker title from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood?
