Now in its fifth year, this brush-based battle begins with the competitors attempting to capture Smeaton’s Tower in Plymouth. The lighthouse was in use until 1877, when coastal erosion forced its relocation. As with Sky’s Portrait variant, the field is narrowed down by artist Tai Shan Schierenberg, art dealer Kate Bryan and curator Kathleen Soriano – in this case 36 participants over six regional heats. And co-hosts Joan Bakewell and Stephen Mangan keep the artists’ spirits buoyed, with not so much a good cop/bad cop routine as a sincere/jokey one.

The prize for the right blend of artistry and accuracy is a £10,000 commission.

Summary

Joan Bakewell and Stephen Mangan return with the search for the nation's best landscape painter, starting at Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth.
