Review

Reeve continues his journey southwards along the Rocky Mountains trail, from Montana to Colorado. It’s a mixture of the ancient and the modern, the timelessly beautiful and the disturbingly dystopian – exactly the kind of unsettling juxtapositions Reeve excels at handling.

One memorable destination is Canon City, Colorado, a place dominated by a network of jails and correctional facilities in the hot, scrubby outskirts to the east of the town centre. Contrast that with a small town where a local policeman is benefiting from the sale of legal cannabis, and you have a section of America where the divisions between urban and rural, and between white and other ethnicities, are as stark as the Montana prairie landscapes.

Summary

Simon reaches the United States, travelling down the Rocky Mountains from Montana to Colorado. In the wide-open prairies of Montana, the cowboy way of life is under threat from a long-term decline in the rural economy, but Simon meets a former Silicon Valley executive who has envisaged a new future for the land. In a country with the highest incarceration rate in the world, Simon's final destination on this leg is a Colorado town that depends almost entirely on 11 prisons. Simon witnesses how inmates are put to work for the state, and how virtual reality is being used to prepare prisoners for life on the outside.
