Review

Don’t they grow up fast? It seems like only yesterday that nine-year-old boy wonder Sheldon Cooper was telling friends and family what to do, and how to do it. But the high-school whizz is now… older... and doing much the same. Of course, the appeal of a know-it-all is limited, comedically and dramatically, and that’s not what Young Sheldon is about but rather, the difficulties of being different.

As series three opens, Sheldon’s mother Mary is more worried than usual about his behaviour when she finds him blocking out sensory input or, as she puts it, “You’re kind of dressed like you kidnapped yourself.” His mentor Dr Sturgis (wonderful Wallace Shawn), meanwhile, is having a nervous breakdown.

As ever, the show is unafraid of tough subjects, and knows just when to soften them with a gag. And the writers share the funnies around, so every member of Sheldon’s family has his or her moment in the dysfunctional sun.

Summary

When Dr Sturgis has a nervous breakdown, Mary worries that Sheldon is heading down a similar path. Georgie discovers he has a knack for sales. Iain Armitage stars.
