Once again, this series highlights troubling details of life inside. We learn that some prisoners at Deerbolt, a young offender institution in County Durham, have found a novel way to distribute illicit items.

Each Friday, Muslim inmates from all wings congregate at the chapel for prayers. After a number of fights break out between inmates (the prison is home to around 400 young men aged 18 to 24) Violence Reduction Officer Nick reviews the video footage.

“Friday prayers [are] traditionally a bit of a flashpoint because of the accumulation of people,” Nick explains. “There are guys there for the right reasons, to worship, but there’s a lot of guys there to distribute drugs, contraband, phones…”

Summary

The reality of life inside one Britain's 30 Young Offenders Institutions - HMYOI Deerbolt in County Durham. Following weeks of violence and unrest, caused by the influx of drugs and mobile phone being smuggled in, a clampdown has been put in force. Acting on intelligence that inmates have been targeting the weekly Muslim prayer service to exchange illicit items, officers, along with the Imam Muhammad Meah, face a battle to regain control. Elsewhere at HMP Bullingdon, officers in the Segregation Unit are dealing with a prisoner on a Dirty Protest who refuses to leave the wing and attempt to appease the situation with newly recruited prison officer Beth Buchanan.
