A Confession

Series 1 - Episode 5

Review

Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher’s grasp on his long and distinguished police career slips away now he’s the subject of a formal complaint from Becky Godden’s angry and bereaved dad. There will be no prosecution of suspect Christopher Halliwell for Becky’s murder, as his confession evidence is disallowed.

Jeff Pope’s riveting true-life drama manages not to get bogged down in legalese – there are very few courtroom scenes, and we see nothing of Halliwell’s prosecution for the murder of Sian O’Callaghan. Instead Pope focuses sharply on Becky’s mum Louise (Imelda Staunton, who is gut-wrenching) and on Fulcher himself (Martin Freeman downplaying admirably) as he is buffeted by the disciplinary process.

Fulcher still unshakably believes he did the right thing in not cautioning Halliwell before his confession, and he’s backed up by Louise, who launches a public campaign to win justice for Becky that reaches the House of Commons.

Summary

Steve Fulcher is lauded by the media for leading an investigation that recovered the bodies of two women murdered by Christopher Halliwell, but behind the scenes faces a disciplinary hearing at the hands of the IPCC, charged with gross misconduct. Karen Edwards refuses to give up her fight to get justice for her daughter Becky, and goes to meet with her local MP Robert Buckland to discuss a change that she thinks needs to made to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act. Starring Martin Freeman and Imelda Staunton.
