The Great British Bake Off

Festival Week

Series 2019 - Episode 7 Festival Week

One of the six remaining contestants does the unthinkable, and tells judge Paul Hollywood to “shut up!”. But in a nice, happy way – no one is rude in the Bake Off. The baker is the recipient of a Hollywood handshake and doesn’t believe their eyes (“no!”) as Hollywood moves in with his congratulations. In another nice moment later in the episode, Hollywood gets his own back.

It’s festival week and there are some tremendous creations in the showstopper round, which features a ludicrously complicated, painstaking Malaysian sarawak cake (as one of the group puts it, “Imagine a battenberg, but with more layers”). The complexity is extraordinary and it’s a real test not everyone can manage.

This is a lovely episode and the remaining half-dozen amateurs are a smashing lot, supportive of each other and, most importantly, they all look as if they are enjoying themselves.

Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig host a special festival-themed round of the culinary competition. The episode kicks off with a signature challenge in which the bakers must draw inspiration from celebrations across the world. Moving on to the technical round, the contestants find the makings of a classic deep-fried Italian dish lurking beneath the mysterious gingham cloths. Finally, the Showstopper puts the bakers' precision and creativity to the test before judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith decide who will be crowned StarBaker.
