Review

Shy young vet George from Hay-on-Wye sits in a London pub and tries to make small talk with women the programme has lined up for him to speed-date. In some cases the talk gets so small it disappears – but then, this show revels in moments of stress and awkwardness, underscoring them with dabs of comedy music.

Luckily, things pick up for George and it’s when things go right that Love in the Countryside delivers properly touching moments. Ruddy-faced dairy farmer Martin was one of the early stars and it’s great to see him now in the throes of real romance with someone he would never have met without the magic of TV. Meanwhile, in gorgeous Cumbria, David is spoilt for choice.

Summary

Sara Cox delivers a collection of love letters to George, a 24-year-old vet in Hay-on-Wye who has not had a relationship in more than two years. She helps him to arrange a speed dating evening with the writers of his favourite letters - but meeting them face to face proves nerve-racking. Dairy farmer David invites three potential partners to stay with him in Cumbria so they can get a taste of rural life. Plus, an update on Martin and Grace, to see how they are getting on in their dating journeys.
