COPPER, an American saga set in 1865 New York City, returns for a second season on the brink of Lincolnsassassination with shifts in politics and society altering the landscape for Irish immigrants and African-Americans.
The principal aim of period detective show Copper appears to be to shock. Within the first five minutes, we see the entrails of a deer being spilt, while over at the local brothel, madame Eva is having her back sliced open by a sadistic psychopath. Murdoch Mysteries, this ain’t.
What it’s more like is Gangs of New York refashioned as a grim crime-of-the-week drama. It also takes itself incredibly seriously, with star Tom Weston-Jones, who plays police officer Kevin “Corky” Corcoran, obviously banned from cracking even a hint of a smile.
