Review

Rugby union has a way of chucking up surprises. One of the biggest came when Japan pulled off the “Brighton miracle” by beating South Africa in the south-coast resort in the 2015 World Cup – and in the process warped the laws of sporting probability.

Four years later, Japan hosts the global showcase, which kicks off today with the Brave Blossoms (as Japan’s team are known) taking on Russia in Pool A. (Scotland and Ireland are in the same group so their fans will watch with interest.)

It’s the curtain raiser for a tournament that is as enticing as it is unpredictable. The normal rule is that the All Blacks arrive as favourites, but this year South Africa and Australia bettered them in the southern hemisphere’s Rugby Championship. And each of the home nations has reason to feel in with a chance – not least Wales after a Six Nations grand slam. Six weeks of bookie-bamboozling action starts here.
