Review

Sue Perkins is baffled as she watches one of Japan’s many girl bands performing for a group of their middle-aged male fans in an insalubrious venue. “Imagine you put Taylor Swift in a garage and filled it with a load of estate agents and football hooligans.”

But Perkins realises she’s made a hasty rush to judgement after talking to some of these devotees in what she describes as a “maddening, brilliant experience… it’s very respectful and calm”.

In her latest two-part travelogue, Perkins is at her perspicacious best. She’s always a brilliant guide but in Japan, a country that’s fascinated her since she was a little girl, she is carried along by waves of delight as her preconceptions falter and fall.

She’s moved by the young woman photographed for a “solo wedding” and gamely goes along with a terrifying business leadership course that’s predicated on shouting.

Summary

Part one of two. Sue Perkins embarks upon a trip around Japan, exploring a nation caught between the demands of a hi-tech future and the pull of a traditional past. Sue begins her journey in the capital city of Tokyo, where she trains with a female sumo wrestling team, before visiting a family who live with robots. Then, she leaves the city behind to see the a different side of Japan, and explore its forests, mountains and islands.
