Review

For the first time in Bake Off history, it’s dairy week – although several of the bakers were probably lactose intolerant by the end of it. Even a former star baker has a disastrous start, so there are a few sniffles.

But it’s the technical challenge that floors the lot of them. “They’re all really bad,” is Paul Hollywood’s reaction when he sees the bakes lined up on the gingham altar. There’s a risk of soggy bottoms with this challenge, but frankly that’s the least of the issues. Then it’s a show-stopping display of colourful mishti – Indian milk-based sweets. Meanwhile Sandi Toksvig gets cosy with one baker – has she got a favourite?

Summary

Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig host Dairy Week, with Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood judging the baker's efforts. The first of the three challenges is a decorative signature bake that involves a tricky turn-out. The bakers then move onto the technical challenge, which is a complex recipe with a long history that dates back to Henry VIII. With the first day behind them, the contestants regroup for the final challenge of the week - an intricate showstopper usually found at the centre of Indian weddings.
