The Shock

Series 5 - Episode 5 The Shock

These days Peaky Blinders is less period drama, more phenomenon. For those of us who thought a move to BBC1 might be risky for a show this ultra-stylised and ultra-dark, well, we’re looking as shabby as Finn after a long night in the Garrison. Up against ITV’s Sanditon – a textbook Sunday-night drama if ever there was one – flat caps have beaten bonnets.

But whoever he’s up against, Tommy Shelby tends to win. His foes in this season aren’t quite as terrifying as the likes of Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy) or Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody) in years gone by, but fascist MP Oswald Mosley is no pushover.

At Tommy’s slightly spoilt ballet party, Mosley gives a chilling speech denouncing “the usurers of New York, the sweated labourers of the Orient” and declaring “England lives tonight – and marches on!” He also tells Tommy to drink less. Good luck with that.

As the Shelbys come to terms with the shocking events of the party, Tommy reveals his intentions for Oswald Mosley, and someone close to the family finds themselves targeted. Arthur and his men arrive at Limehouse for the arranged rendezvous, but the situation has changed drastically, while Tommy visits an old war comrade who has a very specific skill that Tommy intends to put to good use. Starring Cillian Murphy, Sam Claflin, Paul Anderson, Helen McCrory and Cosmo Jarvis.
