Review

It’s been a while since Dave Myers and Si King roared off on a food odyssey but here they’re biking along the famous highway between Chicago and LA. It’s not going to be a diet-conscious trip if their first meal in the Windy City is anything to go by: an artery-clogging Italian wet beef sub, which requires an ungainly eating stance to avoid being drenched with meat juices. They love it, though.

If that isn’t enough to give them a cardiac arrest, in St Louis they try some of Ted Drewes’s “concrete custard” – an iced treat that’s so thick a tub of it can be turned upside-down and it doesn’t move. No need for that dripping sandwich stance. Their culinary critiques are almost as sophisticated as the food. “Oh wow, man!” seems to be the extent of it.

Other waist-expanding treats are found in a Bosnian restaurant and with an Amish community. The latter’s a challenge for the film crew, because they aren’t allowed to show anyone’s faces.

Summary

Dave Myers and Si King embark on a 2,000-mile journey along the famous American road, taking them through eight different states, each with their own history, flavours and people. They begin by learning about Chicago's meatpacking industry, before moving on to small-town American, where they spend time with the Amish community, cooking together and learning about their different way of life. Their first leg ends in St Louis, where they try `concrete custard' - a treat so rich and thick it has to be served upside down.
