Review

As the young volunteers start their second week at the Royal Derby Hospital, the potential to become over-emotional about the patients increases. It’s a big ask, especially if they’ve not got much life experience themselves, to expect them to cope when someone is fighting for their life.

However, most of them are naturals – happily chatting to patients and getting stuck into the messiest of practical tasks. We see how Alishba, Beth and Michael constantly go above and beyond, while even happy-go-lucky Will has matured a lot. Only Erik still doesn’t “get it”. Unbelievably, he’s four hours late for work because his uniform is damp.

Summary

In a radical social experiment based on a scheme in Germany, 14 young volunteers between the ages of 18 and 24 spend four weeks delivering patient care on the NHS frontline at Royal Derby Hospital, aiming to find out whether volunteers could help relieve the pressures of staff on the wards and make a positive difference to patient care in the NHS. This time, the volunteers embark on their second week at Royal Derby Hospital, where some participants struggle to deal with the difficult realities of life and death. Michael and Piotr work alongside the emergency team to assist an elderly patient who has fallen in her garden, while Alishba offers support to the mother of a young boy who has been brought in for an MRI.
