Review

Towie veteran and TV presenter Mark Wright is absolutely certain his roots are in London’s East End rather than Essex but he reasons that his family may, like many others, have originally been immigrants. For one thing, he’s been told one of his ancestors was Italian, but then he’s also been told his three times great-grandfather Edward went to America for three years without telling his wife where he’d gone.

His first discovery is that Wrighty, as Edward was known, had a criminal record for stealing, which Mark’s slightly disappointed about, although he’s relieved when an East End historian tells him “he was less of an Artful Dodger and more of a Del Boy”.

While that story about America turns out to have some truth in it, the exciting bit comes when he goes back nine generations to find out where his roots really lie. It’s not Italy but here’s a clue (don’t read on if you don’t want to know): he keeps saying, “No carbs before Marbs.” Mark’s investigations take some sensational turns or, as he says, “get seriously interesting”.

Summary

In the final episode of the series, former The Only Way is Essex star and presenter Mark Wright investigates his family history. First, he examines his father's side of the family, and uncovers surprising facts about his Sephardic Jewish ancestry and his relation to a master swordsman living in late 17th-century Andalucia. Mark's journey then takes him to Spain, where he is astonished to find out how one of his relatives survived the terror of the Spanish Inquisition, and another was burned at the stake.
