Review

Presenter Paul Murton searches for magic and enchantment in the latest leg of his trip, around the lochs of Sutherland and Easter Ross. He hears tales of Brahan Seer, said to have forecast the bloody battle of Culloden. The unfortunate Seer died after being hurled off a pier in a burning barrel of tar. Murton notes wryly: “It’s a shame he didn’t see that coming.”

Murton also visits a spot associated with “the wickedest man in the world”, occultist Aleister Crowley, and hears a surprising story of his compassion. He ends on a sad note, with the monstrous punishment meted out to the last woman to be burned as a witch in Scotland, Janet Horne.

Summary

Paul Murton travels around the firths of Easter Ross and Sutherland, beginning at Loch Ussie - famous for its connections with the Brahan Seer, who predicted future calamities. On a golf course above Strathpeffer, he discovers an unlikely connection between the conventional old spa town below and occultist and author Aleister Crowley, before heading for the Dornoch Firth, where he encounters a witch and a fairy bridge.
