Series 1 - Episode 5 Aloha

1960s Los Angeles has been dark for most of this drama – lots of scenes taking place in Edward Hopper-like night-time bars, as journalist Jay and teenager Fauna follow their own paths to the truth. This week the scenery changes, as the pair head to Hawaii in search of Fauna’s birth mother, Tamar Hodel. But as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. For Fauna, what she hears is almost beyond comprehension.

As for Jay, the stakes are getting higher in his obsessive determination to solve the case that destroyed his career. I Am the Night is undoubtedly powerful, but it’s not exactly uplifting, and it’s not helped by the inclusion of some grisly photographs of the real-life Black Dahlia murder from the 1940s. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a series that’s left me feeling this grubby.

Jay and Fauna search for a way to make it to Hawaii so Fauna can find her mother, and for Jay to see if she holds the answers to the Hodel case that destroyed his career.
