Review

Larnell Bruce was 19 when, after an altercation in Portland, Oregan, he was run over by Russell Courtier and died. Bruce was black while Courtier belonged to the white supremacist group, European Kindred. Was racism the motivating factor for what happened?

Journalist Mobeen Azhar visits Portland as Courtier goes on trial accused of murder and a hate crime. But the court case isn’t that straightforward.

There’s an air of Louis Theroux about Azhar’s gently pertinent probing, but it doesn’t take much digging to uncover a disturbingly deep seam of racism. Some of the comments he hears, expressed openly and calmly, will sicken and alarm you.

Summary

Part one of two. Mobeen Azhar investigates the murder of Larnell Bruce by a member of a white supremacist gang in Portland, and assesses the degree to which race played a role in the choice of victim. The investigation delves into the history of the seemingly liberal city, and uncovers a dark underbelly of racial tensions in the state of Oregon. The programme also examines the events of the trial, which were marked by clashes between anti-fascist groups and white supremacists on the streets. Featuring interviews with members of the militant groups and expert witnesses called on to testify.
