Review

NO! The Royal ends for good… on a cliffhanger!

So cruel! Either this is a tasteless what-the-hell-we’ve-been-cancelled joke, or ITV’s death warrant arrived too late. So we will never know if a certain someone survives a certain potentially difficult situation. I don’t mind telling you, I feel cheated.

As we say farewell to St Aidan’s Hospital after eight years of crazy plots and the kind of accident set-ups that even Casualty would find unconvincing, Dr Jill Weatherill is ordering prawns. Don’t laugh, it’s for little Aisling’s adoption party.

As her meek husband, Dr Gordon Ormerod, trots to the quayside to buy said seafood, he notices the fisherman looks a bit peaky. Soon he’s embroiled in a domestic dispute (and here The Royal momentarily becomes Look Back in Anger) that turns out so badly that Nick Drake has to sing on the soundtrack.

God, I’m going to miss it.

Summary

Dr Ormerod opens a can of worms while attending to the problems of a local family, and when violence spills on to the wards he is caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile, Aisling's adoption is official, but Sister Brigid is confused by her feelings. Last-ever episode of the hospital drama, starring Robert Daws, Linda Armstrong, Amy Robbins and Glynis Barber.
