BBC Proms: Sheku plays Elgar

“My favourite piece of music ever,” said Sheku Kanneh-Mason of the Elgar Cello Concerto on a recent Proms Encore. “It made me want to be a cellist. It’s so expressive, and to now be able to play it is an amazing feeling.” His performance will be the big draw tonight in an ambitious programme from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla.

There are rare airings for Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Third Symphony, Oliver Knussen’s suite The Way to Castle Yonder and Dorothy Howell’s tone poem Lamia, first heard at the 1919 Proms. Making her presenting debut (alongside Tom Service) is Sheku’s big sis, the pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason performs Elgar's Cello Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall, with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and their Music Director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla. Introduced by Tom Service and Sheku's sister, pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason.
