Review

Aisling Bea’s brittle-yet-tender comedy is proving to be a real grower. Chaotic, kind, flailing, damaged Aine (Bea) could quickly become tiresomely needy, but Bea keeps her bobbing along with dollops of misplaced optimism, bleak jokes and an almost paralysing need to people-please.

Aine, who flees her flat because she can’t bear another minute with her sex-obsessed housemate, will do anything not to upset anyone, including making the most of a truly terrible date, a bore who drinks beer through a straw, dumped on her by her adored sister Shona (Sharon Horgan, who’s great, as you’d expect, playing a woman who is secure in so many aspects of her life, but endlessly worried about her damaged sister). The pay-off at the end of this disastrous evening is just lovely.

Aine can’t even bring herself to hurt the feelings of an insipid psychic, who tells her, “You are star-struck by male energy.”

Summary

Aine and Richard's relationship gets complicated when she is inadvertently invited for dinner but leaves early after an awkward misunderstanding. Aine concocts a lie to spend the weekend with Shona, much to the annoyance of her boyfriend Vish. Pushed out of the house by a frustrated Shona, Aine pays a visit to a psychic before an unexpected blind date goes horribly wrong. Meanwhile Shona and Charlotte grow closer as Shona opens up about her worries for her sister. Comedy, written by and starring Aisling Bea, with Sharon Horgan and Tobias Menzies.
