As Rick Stein demonstrates his recipes, muzak bubbles away in the background. I can’t imagine why — it feels like a 1980s tourist board video. If you come to the series hoping to see Spain looking its best, you’re out of luck; but if you want inspiration, stick around.

Amid the rambling travelogues (Rick chats with the drummer from a Beatles covers band; Rick goes on a partridge shoot) are great recipes made from local produce. It’s hard to get those giant, ridged, misshapen Montserrat tomatoes in Britain, but seeing the salad Rick makes with them (using pickled cauliflower), you’ll wish you could.


The chef continues his culinary tour in Castile - a region famous not only for its vast plains and castles but also as the home of 11th-century military leader El Cid - before heading to La Mancha, an area renowned for its rustic dishes and wine production, as well as being the land of Miguel de Cervantes' literary character Don Quixote.
