Review

All good sitcoms must have one, and this is a very good sitcom, so here it is: the dinner party episode. Alison and Mike meet their neighbour, a shabby toff named Barclay Beg-Chetwynde – played by Geoff McGivern, the modern master of the hilariously untrustworthy neighbour/uncle guest role.

Having invited himself round, Barclay arrives with his spectacular lush of a wife (Sophie Thompson) and sets about conning cash out of his hosts, as well as free food – all this coinciding with Robin the Caveman trying to conduct a ritual to mark the lunar eclipse. The result is tremendous chaos, but with a deluge of beautifully crafted comic and dramatic pay-offs in the last five minutes. Sublime.

Summary

Learning that their posh neighbours the Beg-Chetwyndes have an ancient claim over their land, Mike and Alison throw an upmarket dinner party to help resolve a thorny issue. But with the ghosts her only guide to high-class decorum, the evening starts badly and only gets worse - thanks to Mary's woeful catering, Mike's clueless deal-making and Robin's raucous celebration of the lunar eclipse. Elsewhere, the spooks become obsessed with a TV sitcom. Comedy, guest starring Geoff McGivern and Sophie Thompson.
