Review

Amid all the programmes spawned by last year’s royal wedding, this instalment of 24 Hours in A&E may well be the most profound. Its subject is enduring unions, exemplified by John, 92, brought in with a head injury, and his wife of 66 years, Maggie, who is impressively spritely for 97. Proper Londoner Minnie, 98, who calls everyone “mate”, has a blood clot in her leg that presents doctors with a challenge, but as her daughter Chris recalls, it’s not the first she’s faced in her life. And as the St George’s staff get teary-eyed watching the royal nuptials, I felt rather lachrymose, too, over the words of Lynda, as she describes how her partner David’s accident led to a belated realisation.

Summary

Cameras follow patients at south west London's St George's hospital on royal wedding day. As Harry and Meghan tie the knot, patients and their relatives reflect on the meaning of lifelong love, devotion and commitment. Among those treated are David, 74, who is flown to St George's by air ambulance after falling from a ladder. Medics suspect internal bleeding and he is rushed to CT to assess the damage. His wife Lynda makes her way to the hospital as doctors try to prevent catastrophic blood loss.
